According to Google’s search tool, more than 1,800,000 searches were made for the phrase “hacking facebook” last month alone. That’s a hack of a lot of people wanting to figure out or probably even willing to buy some proven system how to break into your facebook account and hack away.
I just saw this article that announced facebook found the hackers that recently managed to get porn pictures into some user’s newsfeeds.
An email came in yesterday from an attendee of a workshop I was giving to NSA members in North Carolina over the weekend where the person was asking if it was okay to just login to facebook once per week.
Putting those two situations together, you should be highly convinced by now to at least login once per day and make sure….well, that you still CAN login to your facebook account! Hackers are everywhere it seems.
Although the big companies love Google Plus and are starting to focus their efforts there, facebook continues to offer only a few things you can do to keep your account safe. They include:
1. Have a second admin assigned to your account so that if anything happens to your main account, you can still get in.
2. Change your password frequently; even once per week is a good idea.
3. Make your password impossible to guess. Using a mixture of numbers, letters, characters and upper/lowercase should all be part of your password. Yeah, every time I login to systems like facebook, I have to find my password (because I couldn’t possibly memorize it), and then copy and paste it to the password field. KeyPass is a great free software tool for storing your passwords on your computer in a secure holding area.
4. Inspire your friends and Likes to visit your website and sign-up for something…anything!! in order to get them on your list so that you can still communicate with them if something happens to your facebook account.
5. Keep a close eye on who you are friending-up with. If you see overly high numbers of posts per day or posting or comments of questionable content, be quick to de-friend. You just don’t have time to give people a lot of chances.
Most importantly of all, make sure you login to facebook at least once per day and check your content and photos. Make sure you know exactly what’s being posted on your facebook pages and you will be able to stop at least most of the hacker attempts.
Let’s just hope facebook continues to enhance their process for finding hackers as 1,800,000 searches means a lot of malicious hackers are just waiting to find the secret to hacking facebook!
