Here is a partial recording of our first official live, web-based, meeting for the Here Next Year Club. Our focus is live video. Great job by Peter Brissette for his showcase 5-minute presentation, Deb Alps for her 2-minute tip of the day, and Dana Morgan-Barnes for providing a formal Toastmasters-style evaluation for Peter’s live video.
Yes, Zoom is a new system for me. So, I have some learning to do. I will be working with support over the next couple of days to iron out things like why that stupid image of a video camera keeps popping up! Sorry about that. Anyway, focus on the content and what we are trying to do here and become part of the club. Hope to see you on the next meeting.
As you can see, ALL of us (yes me too!) need to work on a few things when it comes to live video:
- Screen Contact – It’s a bit like learning how to give good eye contact when in front of a live and in-person audience, but when you have a screen to look at, your eyes have to stay on that screen. Just like when we watch the news on TV. The newscasters are looking at the camera the entire time they’re presenting something. Sure, they may look away when they’re interviewing someone or talk to each other if there are people sitting next to them. But, when there is news to report (otherwise known as presenting), they look right at the camera for the entire time. I challenge each of us on next week’s meeting to do the same.
- Ums and Ahs – Every presenter today is a current Toastmasters member. If you’ve ever been member of a Toastmasters club, you know how much emphasis we make on not using ums and ahs in our delivery. Then, we’ll walk out in the hall after meetings and have casual conversations with members and you’ll hear ums and ahs all over the place. That translates to live video. Let’s have the second challenge next week to reduce the ums, ahs and filler words.
- Humor – Dana made a great point during Peter’s evaluation. Even though we’re not really in a physical room with each other. It’s okay to use humor. It’s okay to laugh as audience members. We can all use more humor in our deliveries.
This first meeting was a great example of where we are and where we want to go with the Here Next Year Web Marketing Club and how we want the focus to be on improving our presentation skills using live video at the same time.
Next week, we will have many (but probably not all) of the technical issues ironed out and we’ll go from there.
Wont’ you join us next Tuesday, September 27, 2016, from 9-10am (Mountain Time)?
All you have to do is join our LIFETIME FREE members area where we will post next weeks meeting login details. Hope to see you there!
