A lapel microphone for your iPhone or Droid phone will probably be the first hardware device you purchase to improve your live and recorded video. But, you don’t have to buy the top of the line to hear an improvement in your recording. If you’re on a limited budget, start small and focus on function. This video features a lapel mic with an extension cord along with adapters and a nice wind sock.
Here I’m on top of a windy mountain in the Colorado Rockies to test out my newly purchased and received microphone rig. I start with no microphone and make a sort of humorous mistake where I say, “See what that sounds like?” The funny part is that I had my iPhone on my tripod facing me…which means the microphone on the phone was facing me too and the wind was hitting the back of the phone. So, it sounds clear without the microphone…in the wind!
Once I add the microphone to my shirt, where the wind is hitting the microphone head-on, there’s the wind!
Here is the microphone system I was using.
