That’s the message I walked away with when I finished reading Good to Great, the book by Jim Collins. Do you believe you have a GREAT company or just a good one? Well, that’s pretty much where I was when I picked up Good to Great; wondering what it takes to actually move a good company to the level of a great one.

What Jim’s book helped me realize is that every great company has had a transition point—a time where a bunch of circumstances thrust your company to all-new levels, never to see a downturn again back to such a low point.

Jim had a team of expert researchers who evaluated companies who went from good to great. Gillette, Kroger, Pitney Bowes, Walgreens, Wells Fargo, are just a few of the studied choices. No, McDonald’s is NOT on the list.

I guess my point is that you should buy this book if you are the owner of a business and want more growth for your company beyond the normal level of growth achievement. You must study how other companies used their pivotal moments to thrust themselves into a consistently uphill growing progression.

Good to Great is your resource for finding Why Some Companies Make the Leap… and Others Don’t.
