If you want to give better live meeting presentations, start with these suggestions as discussed by our Here Next Year Web Marketing Club members at today’s meeting. We started out with Rocio Perez sharing an emotionally driven story about how her InventivaConsulting.com came to be. Thomas Gerber introduced us to his start-up project called GiversGet.com and gave us lots of good tips for goal setting.
My video feature for today is taken from later in the meeting when Aileen Ellis of AileenEllis.com gave her report in one as she was assigned to be what we call our “Lens Counter.” We are constantly looking for ways to improve our online presentations in front of a video camera. Watch how this started as a simple report but then turned into much more!
Aileen Ellis: “My big takeaway, my learning is that I need to think about where my camera is. I think most of us are doing well going left to right, but we need to think about where our camera is in a comfortable position for our heads to be looking at it for 40 or 50 minutes straight.”
Dana Morgan-Barnes: “Eileen, I have to say, from the first meeting to today, you look so different. Your demeanor, the way you sit, the way you look at the camera. I’m looking at you now sayin, I wanna know this chick! Not to say that I wasn’t happy to meet you before, but you really look like a presence now. You’re really looking at the camera. And, I just want to say that’s super duper, what you’re thinkin’ about…It’s workin!”
Aileen Ellis: “And, Dana, I appreciate that. The call that we did two weeks ago, the constructive criticism I got I wrote notes and I’ve been practicing a little bit. I wouldn’t say I’m great. I would say I’m good, but I feel that I’m getting better at it. So, this group has certainly helped me there.”
Dana Morgan-Barnes: Ya, I think that’s what this helps me with is thinking about the camera…and…oh no, I can’t think of his name! Inayet (one of our other members on the call), I think his camera is too low. (I do too) So, these are things, as we work on, I think it’s good for us to try something out.
“I tried putting a little light over here, because I always have a light over here so I’m trying to figure out how to balance it out. Trying to figure out how to set it so it’s not in my face, so it’s helping.”
Rex Wisehart: “I would vote that would be a mistake. I like your window light.”
Aileen Ellis, “I do too.”
Dana Morgan-Barnes: “Rex said WINDOW, so I’m throwing this thing out!”
Aileen Ellis: “One trick my son helped me with, My son he grabbed these sunglasses and told me to put them right over the camera. So, the camera is right here and that’s for me to pretend there is a person behind it. It sounds like a silly idea, and I’ll put them back there so that I do it. And, it has helped me. But, I’ll tell you, I’m not comfortable. My neck is stiff because I’m looking up for 50 minutes. So, I have to figure out…(humorous interjection here!).”
